The band that refused to die - Broken Daylight @ The Victoria May 09

Odd title, I'll grant you that, but this quip from front man Jon has an element of truth to it. With the rise of his new project The Jon Trowbridge Band, many people thought that Broken Daylight had been finally put to bed, until a few months ago when the original line up hit the live stage once more. Tonight with drummer Lex fulfilling commitments to Matt Kilford elsewhere and Dave Staynings filling the role, the line up is only one man short of the JTB lineup I saw in Camden earlier in the week, but instead of the funked soul rock they delivered then, Broken Daylight ripped through a set of raw and powerful rock to a small but appreciative crowd.

The last time I saw the band was at the Furnace and the combination of the bigger sound capability of the venue and the bigger band was arguably a bit overwhelming, but tonight this stripped down version sounded energetic, hungry and fired up in a way they never did before. Taking some of the sound out, making the music a bit more basic if you like, gave the band a cleaner more aggressive sound that I happen to like and I didn't seem to be the only one. New songs were tried out along side old favourites and the band hammered home a whole host of reasons why they refused to die.

London calling, camden crawling

In the wake of a successful showcase at Under Solo, featuring The Jon Trowbridge Band, playdead have organised another excursion this time for Jeff Like Usual. Under Solo is at 20 Inverness Street, just along from Camden Lock, it's a great little bar and it's free. What more could you want?

Re-inventing the wheel

So another bunch of northern indie darlings for the press to fawn over. They have all the right credentials, Danny McNamara of Embrace proclaiming them one of the top three Manchester bands ever, the Observer singing their praises and record companies fighting for their atention. So what do they all see in this newly emerged three piece.

They have a chaotic charm to their sound, echos of the vim and vigour of past glories such as The Jam, The Fall, The Clash and even managing to make the benchmarks of modern Indie, The Arctic Monkeys sound like a sunday school choir compared to their raw take on the genre. They hve even been described as "The sound of Manchester's youth snatching back '60s psychedelia and using it to smash in the windows of '77 punk." And musically thats not a bad sound bite. The music may not be breaking new ground but at least it's a familiar blend of classic sounds that will appeal to an older audience and seem original enough to a younger one.

The real let down for me comes from their lyrical output, the track We Are Us and its three line rhyming of "you", "do" and...wait for it..."you" being reminiscent of a primary school bronze star in the end of term contest. Twisted Wheel bring little new to the party, but the party is still going to be a lively and slightly nostalgic place so you can't be to hard on them for that.

Emergenza Russia Calling

One of the joys of this internet age we live in is that now instead of having to hunt down music, it comes looking for you. I get loads of mice pace friend requests every day,and whilst most of them are from four spotty guys from Hemel Hempstead looking to ignite the world by sounding exactly like Green Day, occasionally a real gem can fall in front of you. And so it is with Anatomy of Soul, a band from Moscow who play a glossy, anthemic rock, fairly middle of the road, but just exceptionally well done. Give them a listen and if you tell me you don't think "Mr President" isn't a brilliant song, I shall come round you house and punch you. No, I meant it.

Rockit Dolls - a musical history

Nicked a brilliant little write up from young Slaz over at Glamrock Aftershock. The people in this band are now to be found in 2 Sick Monkeys, Veer Luth and Hotel 75, so why not check out a bit of Swindons musical history.

"Well, it is my blog after all ... and if anyone else wants me to shamelessly mention their band (past or present) do let me know and we'll see if we can come to some kind of arrangement.Still, seeing as today is the 20th anniversary of the first gig (20 years!!!) there is at least some point to this posting. So please allow me to set the scene.

It's a gig that shouldn't really have happened, for as of mid-March 1989 we a) didn't have a drummer and b) only had two songs. Our hand was forced after attending a Swindon Rock Front meeting ....."

Hotel 75

There are some brilliant pictures of Hotel 75 from Riffs Bar a few nights back, courtesy of our good friends Puttyfoot Photography. A static version of the photo set will soon be on their myspace for easier viewing.

These shots were taken during their Lord Bishop Battle of the Bands gig. They won their heat and are through to the semi finals on Wednesday 8th April. The prize is a weekend in Germany supporting New York sex-rocker, Lord Bishop.
